Be the Cowboy

One of my favorite albums of the last couple years is Mitski’s Be the Cowboy. Her sounds and lyrics are spell binding, and my wife and I were lucky enough to catch her twice this last year - once in LA’s Palladium, and then again, in Central Park’s Center Stage. I created this poster of Mitski this Memorial Day weekend - it’s a new pop-art style I’m experimenting with, and it’s quite different from my other pieces. Mitski describes that the phrase - “Be the Cowboy” - is about her desire to be bold, confident and unapologetic growing up as an immigrant in America, and how she often found it at odds with her Japanese cultural upbringing.
